Circulation

  • Implement library policies on HSCL members.
  • Register for borrowing privileges.
  • Assist patrons in using the e-library catalog.
  • Add PDF (new membership forms & how to search online catalog).
  • Place course materials on reserve.
  • Self-Checkout Machine: HSCL staff and students can use the self-checkout machine. Other users should visit the Circulation Desk.
  • Assistance with Checkout: For help with the self-checkout machine, see staff at the Circulation Desk.
  • Items Not Available for Self-Checkout: Items requested by another user, reference materials (dictionaries, encyclopedias), and journals/magazines/newspapers.
  • Checking In Items: For checking in items, consult with the Circulation Desk.

Reference and Information

The Reference and Information section offers services to help users make the most of library resources and find information efficiently. Our services include:

  • Answering reference queries.
  • Assisting with the use of library resources.
  • Guiding users on evaluating information sources.
  • Performing citation verification for bibliographies.
  • Conducting mediated literature searches.
  • Instructing patrons on database selection and usage.
  • Providing current awareness of new journal lists upon faculty request.
  • Identifying external web resources when information is not available within library resources, ensuring it meets academic standards.

Training

  • Provide instruction, consultation, training sessions, guided tours, and orientation programs on HSCLA resources.
  • Offer course-related bibliographic and full-text group instruction.
  • Provide one-to-one instruction on accessing online information.
  • Arrange formal sessions for searching databases and other electronic resources.
  • Provide Guides and Tutorials on the use of library resources from LibTutor.

Electronic Current Awareness

  • Set up a personal profile to receive regular updates on new publications.
  • Receive Table of Contents (TOC) alerts for new issues of specific journals.
  • Access current developments and news in clinical medicine through HSCLA databases.

Interlibrary Loan / Document Delivery

Interlibrary Loan is a key service supporting the mission of HSC Library by enhancing access to materials and information. Its purpose is to obtain materials not available in the HSC Library from other nearby libraries or commercial document suppliers. HSCLA also provides materials from our collection to other collaborative libraries in the region. Services include:

  • Obtaining materials and articles not available in the HSC Library.
  • Checking the HSCLA Catalogue and HSCLA Databases before requesting materials from commercial suppliers.

Scanning Services

Scanning services are available on the 1st and 2nd floors. Patrons can scan books and journals to email or save them as PDF files on an external USB drive.

Photocopying

  • Staff-assisted photocopying is available from 8:00 AM to 01:30 PM.
  • Photocopy requests are usually completed within one working day.
